Situated in the heart of the desert state of Rajasthan, Ajmer is one of the most pious cities in north-western India. It was established in the 7th century by Raja Ajay Pal Chauhan, and remained a part of the Chauhan dynasty up to 1193. Ajmer was then conquered by Muhammad of Ghor, who lost it to the ruler of Mewar in 1365.
The burial shrine of the Sufi saint Khwaja Muin-ud-din Chishti, the sacred site is visited by people of all faiths. A popular time for Ajmer package tours is during the six-day Urs Festival. Commemorating the death anniversary of the Sufi saint, the entire city comes alive in celebration every year.
